What is LEEA Training?
Operators of different kinds of lifting equipment can obtain training and certification from the international organization known as the Lifting Equipment Engineers Association, or LEEA. Safe scissor lift and boom lift operation is a specific topic covered in their LEEA training.
Through a one-day training from LEEA, operators learn the main parts and components of an aerial lift, pre-use inspections, load capacity guidelines, and safe operating procedures. They also receive hands-on practice with operating and positioning an aerial lift. Upon completion, trainees earn a LEEA qualification card valid for 5 years. This training is ideal for those who frequently use scissor lifts or boom lifts in their day-to-day work.
What is IPAF Training?
IPAF, the International Powered Access Federation, is a not-for-profit training body focused solely on aerial lift equipment. Their “IPAF training” program has a broader globally recognized scope that also includes self-propelled booms, articulated booms, telehandlers, and vertical personnel lifts (scissor lifts).
Similar to LEEA training, the IPAF training one-day course covers inspection, operation, and safety procedures, and gives hands-on driving experience. However, IPAF certification is specifically geared towards rental companies and those who use different types of powered access machinery. The IPAF card is valid for 5 years and is accepted worldwide as proof of operator competence.
Key Differences Between LEEA and IPAF Training
- Scope – LEEA training solely pertains to scissor lifts and boom lifts, while IPAF certification covers a wider variety of powered access equipment types.
- Acceptance – IPAF certification carries more global recognition and is required for many construction sites worldwide. LEEA is accepted mainly in the UK and Europe.
- Specializations – IPAF offers additional advanced training options like telehandler cranes and order-picking machinery. LEEA does not provide specialty courses.
Both IPAF training and LEEA certification qualify operators to use aerial work platforms safely. However, IPAF may be better for contractors who use diverse lift equipment across projects or international rental businesses. Training from LEEA suits those with needs focused on scissors and boom lifts. Examining your specific needs will help choose between LEEA and IPAF qualifications.
