How to get an IPAF PAL Card

IPAF PAL Card training
Operating powered access equipment safely and productively requires proper certification. An IPAF PAL (Powered Access Licence) card demonstrates that you have the skills and knowledge to use boom lifts, scissor lifts, and other aerial work platforms. Here’s how to obtain your own PAL card.

IPAF-Certified Operator Training

IPAF is the recognized body for powered access certification in the UAE and many other countries. Their training programs ensure operators understand safety principles, machine capabilities, inspections, emergency procedures, and practical operation skills. Training is available through IPAF-accredited training centers like Arbrit, and typically takes one day to complete depending on the equipment categories. Hands-on experience and training in operating different machines is a key part of IPAF operator training.

Theory Test

You will be required to complete a multiple-choice theoretical test following the training session in order to demonstrate your comprehension of safety protocols and machine functioning. Pre-use inspections, emergency preparation, safety devices, personal protective equipment, and more are all covered in the exam. To pass, you must properly respond to 85% or more of the questions. You can retake the exam at a later time, if necessary after you’ve had more time to study.

Practical Test

A practical assessment evaluates your competence in operating machinery. The assessment will test skills learned during the training such as pre-use checks, load charts, set-up procedures, emergency lowering, and practical maneuvers. You must demonstrate safe and productive operation of the machine categories for which certification is required. Upon passing both the theory and practical test, you will be done with your IPAF PAL card training.

Applying for an IPAF PAL Card

The final step is to apply for an IPAF PAL Card online at the IPAF website. You will need to provide personal details and employer information (if applicable) and scan/upload photos of your theory test certificate and practical assessment result notification. There is a fee for the card itself which covers administration and a few years of validity. New cards are sent in the post within a few days of approval.

Keeping your IPAF PAL Card Valid

To maintain validity, IPAF PAL card holders must refresh their training every 5 years by retaking both the theory test and practical assessment. Revalidation helps keep operators up-to-date on industry changes and technologies. Some employers may also require annual code-of-practice or site-specific refresher courses. Proper certification ensures powered access machines continue to be operated responsibly and safely across construction, facilities management, and other industries where they are commonly used.

Gaining a PAL card involves IPAF operator training, passing a theory test, demonstrating competency through a practical, applying online with supporting documents, and periodic revalidation. This gives individuals and their employers some peace of mind that only qualified, trained operators are handling aerial work platforms.

Your trusted training provider like Arbrit Safety Training & Consultancy can provide the right IPAF PAL card training that equips you with the vital skills for the training using powered access safely and productively.
